Pundit makes exciting Manchester United prediction following Raphael Varane transfer – Manchester Evening News

Former England centre-back Matthew Upson believes Manchester United have the necessary tools in Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane to build a hugely successful centre-back paring.

United are on the cusp of completing the signing of Varane after confirming that they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid to land the France international, subject to him passing a medical.

Varane’s impending move to Old Trafford will significantly strengthen United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defensive options, with the Norwegian having been keen to land a world-class, top-level central defender for some time.

With Varane poised to slot straight into the back-four and form a partnership with club captain Maguire, former West Ham United centre-back Upson is confident that both players’ qualities will complement each other and that it could be a very promising partnership in the making.

“Bringing in a player for Manchester United who knows how to cope with the expectation and pressure of playing for a team of that size is key,” Upson told Sky Sports. “You have to say he is the ideal person for that.

“As a centre-back paring they have a lovely balance. You have got one player in Maguire who is a bit bigger, a bit more physical and will want to dominate in the air, and you have Varane who is a bit of a Rolls Royce.

“His reading of the game, the way he sweeps up any trouble, his interventions and interceptions that he has on the pitch are excellent.

“If those two strike it off and get that partnership going, it is hugely positive for Manchester United moving forward.”

Varane is poised to become United’s second statement signing of this summer’s transfer window, following on from the recent £73million arrival of England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
