Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole agree about Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea after Manchester United spell – Football.London

Rio Ferdinand says that the timing wasn’t right for Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United and that the striker is a perfect fit for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

The Belgian spent two years at Old Trafford and made 96 appearances for the club during that time, scoring 42 goals before being sold to Inter Milan in 2019.

Despite that goalscoring record, Lukaku was regularly criticised by United fans during his spell in Manchester, and left the club under a cloud to move to Italy where he won Serie A in his second campaign.

He has since come back to the Premier League to rejoin Chelsea and has hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge as Tuchel‘s side hope to capture the Premier League off Manchester City.

Ahead of the clash between the two sides on Saturday, Ferdinand said Lukaku didn’t fit Man United at the time he was a player there.

“Sometimes it’s about the club fitting the player and the player fitting that club at the right time,” said the BT Sport pundit.

“A lot of that is about timing, I think the timing wasn’t right for him at Man United.

“The stability they have now wasn’t there when he was there, I just don’t think it didn’t work at the time. If it was now it would be very different, I think he’d be doing what he’s doing here.”

Ferdinand went on to praise Chelsea for their transfer business and decision to sign Lukaku, who he described as one of the best forwards in the world at the moment.

“This season Lukaku has come in from word go and finished anything that’s teed up, he’s been immense,” added Ferdinand.

“He’s the focal point, Chelsea were looking for a focal point and he’s that guy.

“At the top level, he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net as good as anyone.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole also praised his old club for the signing of Lukaku, and said they did well to go out and find a player who could finish the chances that Timo Werner was missing last season.

The pundit also suggested that Lukaku was the final piece in the puzzle for Tuchel, who he reckons now have the complete team.

“It’s clear when Chelsea signed him, it’s the easiest bit of business any recruitment team could do,” said Cole.

“Timo Werner is an excellent player but he’s missed chances. This guy [Lukaku] is clinical.

“The conversion rate from him – he’s the real deal and he’s completed Chelsea.”

Despite their praise for Lukaku, he was unable to prevent Chelsea from losing out against City, with Gabriel Jesus’ goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.
