Manchester United have stepped up a gear in their preparations for the upcoming Premier League season.
The Red Devils played their first friendly ahead of the new campaign on Sunday as they saw off Wayne Rooney’s Derby County 2-1 with goals by Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have now relocated to their training camp in Surrey, where they will stay for the next week in advance of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Queens Park Rangers.
The bulk of the squad are still not expected back for another two weeks as they take a much-earned break after Euro 2020.
Though there was one noticeable return among four things we spotted from the first day of United’s pre-season training camp on Monday.
1 – Return for one Euro 2020 star
While many of United’s Euro 2020 stars are still away on holiday, Monday’s training session saw the return of one first-team regular.
Scott McTominay started all three games for Scotland before their disappointing group-stage exit at the European Championships on June 22.
After just under a month to recover, the midfielder is back in training for United and already looks like he is raring to go for the new campaign.
The 24-year-old looked to be training in isolation away from the rest of the team as he took part in some outdoor fitness training as well as some gym work as he looks to catch up with those who have been training over the past two weeks.
Welsh winger Dan James has also been included in United’s 27-man strong camp for the week, though he was a notable absentee from the pictures of the first day in Surrey.
2 – Alex Telles shows his skills
One man who is looking to make a big impression this season after a slow start to life at Old Trafford is Alex Telles.
The left-back made nine appearances for United in the Premier League after signing from Porto last October, in a season where he was largely overshadowed by Luke Shaw.
Telles looked like he was enjoying himself in training, as the club posted a video of the Brazilian doing some kick-ups in training.
One impressive part in particular saw him kick the ball off the ground high into the air before catching it on the front of his boot.
One fan commented on the video shared on United’s Twitter page: “Lightwork for him he’s Brazilian, probably doing that in his sleep.”
3 – Players building strength for the new season
With 23 of the 27 players at the camp involved in the game against Derby on Sunday, Monday’s session was a lighter day to start the week.
Though that didn’t mean there was no heavy work involved as, after a morning rest, the players had a weights session in the afternoon.
Players such as Mason Greenwood, Alex Telles, Teden Mengi were among those seen doing an array of exercises with the weights while Facundo Pellistri looked like he was having a very intense workout.
James Garner took some time away from the weights to work on a punching bag which was held by full-back Brandon Williams.
These sessions are very important for the players as they look to build strength ahead of what will be a very physical and demanding season.
4 – Juan Mata’s acrobatics
The players looked in a jovial made in the soaring heat of Surrey as they went down to the pitches for some one-touch and volleyball exercises.
They were involved in some five-on-five foot volleyball matches in which the group of Juan Mata, Alex Telles, Andreas Pereira, Facundo Pellistri and Tahith Chong proved to be a formidable team.
The players took the competition seriously however with Jesse Lingard protesting like he would to a referee in the middle of the match while Telles was very happy with his team’s success.
Juan Mata showed off his acrobatic skills as he connected with an overhead kick to try and win his team a point – how United fans would like to see him do that into the top corner some point this season.
