Manchester United are reportedly in negotiations with Barcelona over a late move for defender Sergino Dest.
That’s according to journalist Gerard Romero, who states that the La Liga giants are keen to get rid of the 21-year-old, who arrived at Camp Nou two years ago from Ajax in a deal worth around €20 million. Dest, who has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona, was handed his first-team debut at Ajax three years ago by United boss Erik ten Hag.
However, any move for Dest depends on whether or not Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains at Old Trafford, with the Englishman attracting interest from Crystal Palace and West Ham United – with no move currently on the cards.
Dest has been linked to United previously, after struggling to make a real impact on the Barcelona side in his two years at the club so far. And after seemingly losing the right-back spot to Sergi Roberto, Dest may consider his future and whether a move would be the right thing for his career.
However, earlier this summer he suggested that this wouldn’t be something he’s willing to do.
Speaking to ESPN, Dest said: “I am happy at Barcelona, in the club. Definitely, I will stay here. I believe that we cannot play in the Europa League anymore. We have a lot of talent. We are trying to create a new generation and this takes time.”
A lot can change quickly in football, but from the quotes above it’s clear to see that the American sees his future in Spain. United may have to prise him away from Camp Nou if they’re looking to make bring him to the squad, with the player said to have a good relationship with Ten Hag.
