Sergio Aguero has confirmed that his immediate future lies with Barcelona despite rumours linking the ex-Chelsea target with a move away.
The former Manchester City forward only joined the Blaugrana this summer having seen his contract run down at the Etihad Stadium.
He penned a two-year deal with the Catalan giants having enjoyed huge success in the Premier League and was set to link up with his compatriot Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou.
However, that plan appears to have gone awry with Barcelona announcing that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner was set to leave the club in a short statement on Thursday evening.
It read: “Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalised due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish La Liga regulations).
“Given this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue linked to FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of both the player and the Club cannot finally be fulfilled.
“Barca would like to thank with all its heart the player’s contribution to the enhancement of the institution and wishes him the best in his personal and professional life.
The news of Messi’s departure then led to suggestions in the Spanish media that Aguero was also set to leave, having already called lawyers into action to review his contract.
However, the 33-year-old, who was previously linked to Chelsea, has confirmed that he is set to remain with the Spanish giants when confronted by supporters.
As quoted by Sport’s Albert Roge, Aguero said: “Don’t worry, you have me all year long.”
Interestingly, Aguero’s comments suggest that he could look for a route out of the club further down the line having originally agreed a two-year deal.
Whether Chelsea spring to action with Aguero remains to be seen considering that the Blues are edging towards a deal for Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.
