Sergio Aguero opens up on Lionel Messi’s private reaction to Barcelona exit – The Mirror

Sergio Aguero has opened up on Lionel Messi’s private reaction to his shock Barcelona exit.

The ex-Manchester City forward has long been good friends with superstar Messi, with the two being past roommates when playing internationally.

Aguero joined Barcelona with the expectation he would be lining up alongside Messi, but after a shock emotional exit, Messi ended up at Paris Saint-Germain.

Ahead of his debut for Barcelona, after picking up a calf injury, Aguero has opened up in an interview about Messi’s private reaction when he discovered his time at the Nou Camp had been cut short.

And he admits he tried to “distract” his international team-mate, who was clearly hurting after his sudden departure.

Talking to El Pais, Aguero said: “It was a moment of shock. He was very sick. When I found out I couldn’t believe it.

“That Saturday I went to see him at his house. And, because of my personality, since I didn’t see him well, I tried make him forget what had happened.

“I could see that he was half off and I was trying to distract him. I was telling him about my Esports team. And the things we were doing.”

Messi’s Barcelona exit rocked the footballing world.

With Barcelona in dire financial straits and over £1billion of debt, they were forced to significantly reduce their wage bill.

This meant asking key players to reduce their wage bills and being only able to bring players in on free transfers.

However, with Messi things were more complicated because the player had been in the last year of his contract.

Messi had asked to leave a year prior, before deciding against it.

However, as Barcelona had failed to renew his contract before January, signing Messi on a new contract became impossible in their current financial situation.

Financial rules in Spain prevent massive wage drops amongst players from one contract to the next, to prevent financial irregularities and despite hopes Messi might agree to play for free that was not an option.

It culminated in an emotional press conference where the boyhood Barcelona star cried as he confirmed he was leaving.

Since joining Barcelona Aguero has been struck down by injury, and there were even reports he was looking for a way out of the club.

Since Messi left, Barcelona have had a torrid time under boss Ronald Koeman – who it’s reported, they are too poor to fire.

Back-to-back losses in the Champions League, a competition they once dominated, combined with the team sitting at ninth make this one of the Catalan club’s worst season in recent years.

Whilst Memphis Depay started the season well, his form has since dropped off, and one of, if not the only, positive is that La Masia’s youngsters continue to impress on the biggest stages.

Gavi is the latest in a long line who made his debut for Spain after only eight senior appearances.
