Manchester United should welcome back the rest of their squad to pre-season training tomorrow (Monday) as preparations for the start of the Premier League campaign go up a gear.
It’s been a slow burn of a pre-season so far for United and their plans were dealt a blow this week with the cancellation of yesterday’s pre-season friendly with Preston at Deepdale.
That came about after a small number of players and staff returned positive covid-19 tests on Thursday, but the PCR tests returned negative and those players have now returned to the group.
Bruno Fernandes was back in training last week but after the friendly with Brentford at Old Trafford Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said “we’ve got everyone in on Monday” — which will give them two weeks of training before the season opener against Leeds United.
That should mean a first day of training as a United player for Jadon Sancho, who will return alongside United’s fellow England internationals, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire. Shaw played through a rib injury during Euro 2020 but is expecting to be fit for the start of the season.
They won’t be joined by Marcus Rashford, who will undergo surgery on his shoulder this week and will be sidelined for around three weeks.
Those England internationals have had three weeks off since they were beaten in the European Championship final by Italy. The same is the case for Fred, who was a beaten finalist in the Copa America, and the Brazilian international should also be back in training on Monday.
Paul Pogba returned to Manchester from a holiday in Florida last week and is due to begin pre-season training, while David de Gea should also be back, having not been spotted at Carrington so far this summer. Neither has Edinson Cavani, who played for Uruguay in the Copa America.
United are due to spend some of this week at a training camp at St Andrews in Scotland, although it’s unclear how last week’s covid scare has affected those plans.
The club had originally pencilled in a training camp in Malta this week but shelved those plans as a result of the travel uncertainty from the UK.
United face Everton in the final pre-season friendly of the summer at Old Trafford next Saturday.
