Steven Gerrard could be key in Arsenal solving their central-midfield dilemma ahead of the January transfer window.
According to ESPN, the Gunners are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz to provide cover for Thomas Partey and eventually partner him when he returns from the African Cup of Nations.
Mikel Arteta’s side is short of depth in the midfield positions and constant injuries and suspensions in the middle of the pitch is weakening the team.
It seems as though Edu is aiming for Premier League experience as a requirement for a new signing in the January transfer window and Douglas Luiz certainly fills that quota.
The club had previously been linked to Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, however, it seems that the possibility of a transfer is over after his manager, Bruno Lage denied a potential sale of the midfielder.
He said: “Ruben feels this is his second home – and happiness comes with that.
“That’s good, but it’s another thing to convince him to stay. It’s not about a contract or money. It’s about creating a big team that fights for different things.” He added.
“Ruben is in that place where he needs a different challenge. And we also want a different challenge for the club.”
It seems Arsenal have now turned their attentions towards Brazilian midfielder Luiz which is a transfer that certainly makes sense.
Arteta is familiar with the midfielder, as they worked together whilst they were both employed at Manchester City. Luiz struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s team but he has certainly matured as a player since joining Aston Villa.
The Gunners have been linked with a few different central midfielders recently due to the current shortage in quality at the club.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, and Albert Sambi Lokonga still needs time to mature as a player, despite the excellent potential he possesses.
Luiz would certainly be a good short term signing for Arsenal, and if Gerrard can sanction a deal for the midfielder, then it would go a long way in the Gunners’ fight for Champions League qualification.
