‘Surpassed Messi’ – Chelsea fans spot what Antonio Rudiger did against Zenit Saint Petersburg – football.london – Football.London

Chelsea’s 2020/21 Champions League campaign ended in fairytale fashion.

The Blues went all the way to the final after defeating the likes of Real Madrid, Porto and Atletico Madrid on their way to May’s showpiece against Manchester City.

Thomas Tuchel’s side produced a flawless display against the Citizens as Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game after running onto a sublime through ball by English international Mason Mount.

The west Londoners started their Champions League defence against Russian outfit Zenit Saint Petersburg on Tuesday evening, with a scrappy 1-0 win over Sergei Semak’s side.

Zenit defended in a low block and Chelsea playmakers Mount and Hakim Ziyech struggled to create openings for Romelu Lukaku in the first half before Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta delivered an inch-perfect cross to the Belgian frontman, who netted with a powerful header after 69 minutes.

However, defender Antonio Rudiger almost produced an even greater moment of magic, picking up the ball deep in his own half before skipping past several opposition players with some eye-catching dribbling before his effort went just wide.

Blues supporters took to social media to point out the German international’s run was similar to the dribble completed by former Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma against Ajax during the 2019/20 season.

The Frenchman, who joined London rivals West Ham United over the summer, dribbled past a number of players before shooting just over the bar. Here is what some fans said on Twitter.

Rudiger has been extremely impressive during Tuchel’s reign as Chelsea manager after struggling to impose himself under previous head coach Frank Lampard.

However, the 28-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign and football.london understands that talks over a new deal have begun between Chelsea and Rudiger’s representatives, although no agreement has yet been reached.
