Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late brace against the Republic of Ireland to become the outright highest international goalscorer of all-time.
The 36-year-old struck twice in the dying enviers to cancel out John Egan’s first-half header and earn Portugal a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Algarve.
His first goal was arguably the most memorable personally, as it saw him leap ahead of Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals for Iran, as the top international marksman.
As the game was heading for a point apiece, Ronaldo stepped up to head home his 111th in a Portugal shirt which sparked wild scenes amongst the home faithful.
It wasn’t a perfect performance from the Manchester United man as he missed an early penalty when Gavin Bazunu guessed the right way to keep out his spot-kick in the 15th minute.
But Red Devils fans have been giving their reaction to Ronaldo’s record-breaking goal, with some suggesting that he’s the ‘greatest ever to do it’.
Here’s what some of them had to say:
@MrTeeeeeeeee : My striker!
@JapNightwolf : All I can say is wow. Yet people who simply don’t like the man talk shit. I’m never with the Messi Ronaldo debate. I recognize two very GREAT players in general! Congrats @Cristiano.
@adammaltman : The reason he is the best in the world.
@haseeb1896 : The greatest in the history of the sport.
@kevinlewis99 : Ridiculous human being!
@PrinceRoss44 : Goes to show he still has it and still world class at 36. Truly the greatest of all time.
@OhItsSteely : He does it again. Alone at the top, the greatest to ever do it. Even better that he done scores two late goals to beat that lot.
Ronaldo’s last-gasp double perfectly encapsulated what he’s still capable of as he prepares to make his second United debut after the international break.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face Newcastle United on Saturday, 11 September and the forward, who completed the deal in Lisbon on Tuesday, is set to feature in that game.
