Kurt Zouma’s future at Chelsea is uncertain with speculation recently that he could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.
The 26-year-old defender could be included in a player-plus-cash deal for Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, according to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Romano claims that the Seville-based outfit “appreciate” Zouma and that talks are ongoing for a possible swap deal.
Since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment in January, the France international has played just 13 times in all competitions for Chelsea.
Tuchel opted with Antonio Rudiger, who has less than 12 months remaining on his contract, on a more frequent basis than his Blues team-mate, despite the German defender being somewhat frozen out by Frank Lampard before his departure.
Speaking in May this year, Tuchel opened up on how the situation was a bit “unfair” on Zouma, but explained his reasoning.
“Nothing is better than what he is doing to fight for a new contract,” the Chelsea manager said.
“If he wants to have a new contract he has our full support, if he wants to stay at the club then speaking with performances, this is what he’s doing.
“Since day one we chose him in the first match, it was an unfair decision against Kurt, but he is German and I had a clear picture of what he can do because I followed him a bit more than Kurt Zouma.
“So it was an unfair decision and I had a clear picture of what I can ask of him and what he is capable of delivering to a team.
“He took the chance and since then it is absolutely well deserved that he is in the team.
“He is kind of an aggressive leader, has a natural aggression in him, hates to lose, hard to beat in duals, very very brave and full of energy in defending.
“He is leading by example, he has a positive aggression, this is what we like and when he can channel all this into top performances we are very happy to have him.”
Tuchel is reportedly keen to bring a new centre-back to west London despite a wealth of options at his disposal.
The aforementioned pairing of Zouma and Rudiger, as well as Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Malang Sarr are all set to be available to the German for the Blues’ opening weekend clash against Crystal Palace.
