Thomas Tuchel must solve how Chelsea’s biggest strength was ruthlessly exposed by Man City – Football.London

Gabriel Jesus’ goal gave Manchester City a deserved win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The narrow scoreline perhaps did not fully display the gulf in much of the play between the two sides as Pep Guardiola finally overcame Thomas Tuchel for the first time since the German boss joined the Premier League.

Both Tuchel and Guardiola placed emphasis on the quality of City’s performance, not allowing the Blues to play their own game.

Alan Shearer was equally impressed, and highlighted the champion’s pressing that nullified Chelsea.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “That was as good as a City performance as I’ve seen for a long time, they were superb in every department.

“Chelsea went in with a three this time, and the pressing from the very first minute from Manchester City, not in ones and twos but fours and fives. There was just no way out for Chelsea.

“They couldn’t pass it out because of the energy City in there.

“Second half it didn’t change at all. They didn’t give them a moment’s peace on the ball and that five again were in there. In the end they probably had to kick it long and that was no problem either for City as they won that ball as well.”

However, the more concerning issue may lie in the number of chances Chelsea conceded. Tuchel made changes as N’Golo Kante was replaced by Kai Havertz and inevitably had to open up as they pushed for an equaliser.

The Blues have kept more clean sheets than goals they’ve conceded under the 48-year-old coach but Saturday was the third time Chelsea had conceded 15 or more shots in the Premier League this season.

Perhaps even more concerning was that due to the visitor’s high pressing, Chelsea could not muster a shot on target for the first time under Tuchel.

“Particularly second half, creating changes wasn’t a problem for them,” Shearer said of City.

“We’ve spoken about how good Chelsea are defensively. Well they didn’t look it today because of that. They get a little bit of luck and Jesus gets his goal.

“Grealish, who I thought was excellent, caused all sorts of problems on that side.

“[In] the last five minutes, they’re winning, they were relentless, they just didn’t stop. No way out for Chelsea, they’re still trying but they just couldn’t do it. Man City win the ball back and [create] another opportunity that should be in the back of the net.”

There will be few teams that can put in a performance to the standard City did against Chelsea, but Tuchel will be more than aware of the vulnerability that has emerged.

The Blues hope to be fighting at the pinnacle of five competitions this season and will hope to find more daunting tasks. Tuchel will once again have to prove his tactical acumen on their journey.
