Thomas Tuchel outlines area Timo Werner can improve amid transfer links away from Chelsea – Football.London

Thomas Tuchel has called on Timo Werner to be “more decisive” in the dangerous areas of the pitch, with the Chelsea striker linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Werner has spent just one season with the Blues after the west London outfit paid his £47.5million release clause in his RB Leipzig contract and he has endured a mixed time at the club so far.

In his first campaign as a Chelsea player, the Germany international finished the term as the club’s joint-top scorer – with 12 goals in all competitions – alongside Tammy Abraham.

But there were points throughout the campaign where Werner missed some golden opportunities which meant criticism was fired in the forward’s direction.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in recent weeks, with Sky Germany saying the Blues have ‘asked around’ to see if there are any potential suitors for the Germany striker.

However, Werner has been preparing for the new campaign with his Chelsea team-mates and took part in his side’s 2-1 pre-season friendly victory over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The former RB Leipzig star played the first 45 minutes before being replaced by Tuchel, who spoke about his striker following the win at the Emirates Stadium.

“Nothing has changed so far. He had a so-so Euros with Germany, but that was a concern of the whole team not his personal problem,” the Chelsea boss said on Werner.

“Now it’s on him. Like always it’s on him to show his quality and his ability.

“It’s very hard to have a first match, first 45 minutes after a tough week that we put into the players, to play on this kind of level.

“I am happy that he was dangerous but there were some chances where he could be more decisive, [he] could have scored could have assisted another one or two.

“It is a bit the same, like in the last games, but like I said, we have just started and it is not the moment to blame.”

Werner was tipped to improve massively next season by Tuchel, when the Chelsea boss spoke in late-May: “He’s still young and can still improve. This is what we demand week by week.

“When he has some time to reflect, rest, some time on holiday for mental rest, I’m sure he can take the next steps next year.

“He is not new anymore, he will know the environment, what he is coming back to, his team-mates, what he is up against on the first game and how to adapt. This will help him.

“We try to push the process right now because we need him.”
