Chelsea have been conducting a high-profile search for a new No.9 with Timo Werner failing to fire in his first season at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud has departed for Milan, while Tammy Abraham is apparently not seen as the man to lead a title charge in west London.
The Blues are among a number of teams keen on signing Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, but the striker won’t come cheap. The Bundesliga side are said to be holding out for £150million for the 20-year-old, though he will be available for around £64million next season due to a release clause in his contract.
The latest rumours circulating are that Chelsea may have given up on a move for the striker this season, with Dortmund unwilling to budge on their asking price having already agreed a £73million sale for Jadon Sancho to Manchester.
That has led the Blues to consider a move for Bayern Munich star Lewandowski. The striker will turn 33 this summer, and though Bayern are keen on keeping the Poland international and even extending his stay beyond 2023 when his current contract expires, they could reportedly be convinced to sell by a bid of around £50million.
Tuchel knows plenty about the striker having faced him while manager at Dortmund, and has already been proven right about a prediction he made ahead of a clash against the Bundesliga giants.
In a comparison with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has since moved to Arsenal, Tuchel stated that both strikers were yet to reach their peak, labelling Lewandowski as “scary”.
“Robert Lewandowski scores incredibly well from many different situations,” Tuchel said back in 2017. “I think that both are just too ambitious to achieved their zenith.
“Lewandowski has now begun to score from direct free-kicks with regularity, which is scary. That is why I think he is someone who is very good example of a player who is wanting to develop constantly, to constantly improve every detail, in scoring technique, to be able to shoot with both feet, now even in set-piece situations.
“And therefore I fear that his zenith is not reached.”
Tuchel was right about Lewandowski. The striker recorded his best ever goal tally in the Bundesliga last season, breaking Gerd Muller’s long-standing record by netting 41 goals.
