Thomas Tuchel sets Kai Havertz challenge as Chelsea fans debate alternative for Erling Haaland – Football.London

Thomas Tuchel liked what he saw from Kai Havertz at this summer’s European Championships.

Despite being knocked out with Germany at the hands of England at the round of 16 stage, the Chelsea ace was one of few players from Joachim Low’s squad to emerge from the tournament with his reputation intact.

Two goals in four appearances was an impressive return, whilst he also caught the eye against the Three Lions at Wembley Stadium when operating on the right of an attacking trio alongside fellow Blues forward Timo Werner and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller.

Havertz would have had hopes of becoming a double European Champion after scoring the goal against Manchester City to help Chelsea win the Champions League last season.

That wasn’t to be, but he did impress his club manager and compatriot who has challenged the 22-year-old to keep improving in order to reach the next level.

“For him personally he played a good Euros,” Tuchel told the club’s official website. “He was a threat constantly in the German team for the others to score.

“Of course he had an excellent ending to our season and although the German team did not do so well at the Euros, I think he can personally be satisfied with the first steps he made here in England and with the outcome for him.

“There’s things to improve, things to keep the level up high, where he can play and he proved that he can play.

“This is the next step.”

Tuchel’s comments about Havertz come hot on the heels of an interesting debate amongst some Chelsea fans regarding the 22-year-old’s best position.

There’s a theory that Chelsea shouldn’t splash the cash on Erling Haaland this summer and instead stick with the German International – a £71m signing last summer – as the central striker.

On Reddit, u/Adamsandlerrex opened a discussion by stating: “Unpopular Opinion: I’d rather stick with Havertz as a striker than to pour 175 million on Haaland.”
