Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson have all been shortlisted for awards from UEFA following their performances in last season’s Champions League campaign.
Manchester City’s season may have ended in heartbreak as they were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea in Porto, but Pep Guardiola’s side were still impressive during their march to their first-ever Champions League final.
The Blues overcame the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain to reach the showpiece match and as a result three of their players have been recognised for their excellent displays.
The nominations were selected by the 32 coaches which managed teams in the group stages of the 2020/21 campaign (although they couldn’t vote for their own players) and 55 journalists, one from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations.
The awards are for the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward, with the top three players to receive the most voting points in each position earning a nomination for the award.
City shot-stopper Ederson is up for the goalkeeper of the tournament against Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy and Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois. Dias has been shortlisted as the best defender alongside Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger.
De Bruyne has also been nominated, as the standout midfielder in the tournament though he too will face a pair of Chelsea players in N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.
Neither Chelsea or City have a nomination for the best forward, with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe of PSG and Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland getting the nod.
The winners of each award will be announced during the draw for this season’s group stage on Thursday, August 26, in Istanbul, Turkey.
