Tottenham could turn their attentions to Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma, after the latest blow in the north Londoners’ pursuit of Jules Kounde is revealed.
Instead, it now looks like Spurs’ rivals Chelsea have repeated their Willian trick once again by opening talks with the young French defender for a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge this summer.
It has been understood that, unlike the Tottenham proposal, Kounde would say ‘yes’ to moving to the Champions League winners this summer.
In a day that has seen long-serving defender Toby Alderweireld depart for Qatar and bitter rivals Chelsea swoop in for the Sevilla centre-back, there could still be some good news for Spurs fans as they look to enact some revenge on the west London club.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that long-term target Zouma could potentially move to join Espirito Santo’s outfit after the latest news broke in relation to the Kounde pursuit.
His update read: ‘Tottenham still in negotiations for Cristian Romero but no agreement yet on €55m fee – he’s the priority.
‘Plan B: open talks to sign 3 different defenders for the same amount. Tomiyasu [€18m], Milenkovic [€15m] and Zouma [€25m].’
With the Atalanta defender moving ever closer to moving to England, it looks like one of the three names mentioned will be the other centre-half signed this window by director of football Fabio Paratici as he looks to help the new Portuguese manager revamp the defence.
Previous manager Jose Mourinho was a big fan of the 26-year-old and tried to bring him to the white side of north London during his tenure in charge at N17.
However, this move didn’t come to fruition with ex-Chelsea manager Frank Lampard at the time not keen on losing one of his key players to London rivals in the shape of Tottenham.
With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, the narrative around the ex-Saint Etienne defender has now changed.
Limited minutes have meant that Zouma is now thought to be reconsidering his future at the club, with Roma and now Spurs keen on securing the services of the defender.
Tuchel himself wouldn’t even blame the Frenchman for wanting out this summer, as the German boss admitted back in May that he has been ‘unfair’ on the defender since he took charge.
He said: “Since day one we chose him [Antonio Rudiger] in the first match, it was an unfair decision against Kurt, but he [Rudiger] is German and I had a clear picture of what he can do because I followed him a bit more than Kurt Zouma.
‘So it was an unfair decision and I had a clear picture of what I can ask of him and what he is capable of delivering to a team.”

Zouma could follow now ex-Blues central defenders Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi out of the exit door this summer, as both completed their respective moves to AC Milan and the latter to Crystal Palace earlier on in the transfer window.
But it may not be for Tottenham, with Romano providing a fresh update this evening saying that the Blues are keen on including Zouma in a possible swap deal for the Sevilla defender.
His most recent Kounde tweet read: ‘Jules Koundé deal update: Chelsea are in advanced talks with Sevilla and Kurt Zouma could be included in the negotiation.
‘Possible swap deal to go through in the next hours/days with Zouma + money for Koundé to Chelsea.
‘Personal terms agreed for Koundé until 2026.’
It will be interesting to see how this one develops over the next few days.
Spurs will still be in the hunt for Chelsea’s number 15 until any official decisions are made and announced.
