Former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has been forced to miss Belgium’s last 16 tie with Italy at Euro 2020 due to injury.
Hazard has been in and out of the physio’s treatment room at Real Madrid this season and the move to summer football appears to have done little to end that run of misfortune.
On Thursday, July 1, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez had warned fans that he may be forced to leave Hazard out for the crunch tie, as well as Manchester City star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.
Martinez said: “They didn’t join the group this morning. They couldn’t train with the group just yet, but probably that is something that we expected.
“It has been another 24 hours, another 24 hours that they have been positive towards their recovery.
“But we all know that we are fighting against time. We are going to take until the last minute to make the decision [about playing vs Italy].”
Unfortunately for Hazard he was not able to pass the late fitness test, unlike de Bruyne, and fans on social media have expressed their regret at not getting to see him reach the levels he did as a Chelsea player.
