Chelsea fans have joked that central defender Antonio Rudiger could play in a number of different positions after a clip emerged from the Blues’ 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League.
Rudiger, 28, played the full 90 minutes in the west Londoners’ latest league win which saw them climb to the top of the standings after Saturday’s action came to an end.
The German has already showcased the different elements to his game including the marauding run against Zenit which nearly resulted in an opening goal in that contest and he replicated something similar to this in the most recent home game against the Saints.
In the 35th minute, the Champions League-winning defender’s adventurous run and clever pass was finished off well by striker Romelu Lukaku who was in an offside position when the ball was played through to him.
Despite the goal being ruled out, fans of the west London club on Reddit were highly impressed with the assist from Rudiger on this occasion.
Here are a select few of the best responses to this moment.
@typicalpelican joked: ‘Rudi Loftus-Cheek.’
@Cowdude179 reckons: ‘That was beautiful, Lukaku has to time his run right there.’
@RSLDN8 wrote: ‘Honestly, Rudiger is due an absolute Puskas type goal in his career lol. Zouma too.’
@thepotatoinyourheart put: ‘So unselfish of Rudiger, you love to see it.’
Talk online then switched to the 28-year-old’s current contract conundrum, with the large majority hoping he commits to the west London club for the rest of his career.
@vatsal_0810 stated: ‘Give this man what he wants.’
@JoshWheezer smartly pointed out: ‘He is really working for that contract lol.’
If the fans views and Rio Ferdinand’s recent comments are anything to go by, then Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia should oblige the wage demands that the defender is requesting if he is to stay in SW6 come the end of the season.
“At the moment, yeah,” Ferdinand told BT Sport when asked if Rudiger was the best defender in the Premier League.
“I think Dias last season was the best overall, but since Tuchel’s come, I think he’s been the most commanding centre-back in the league.
“He’s been phenomenal. In terms of his absolute desire to win every ball, aggression.
“Bearing in mind he’s come from the wilderness under the previous manager Frank Lampard, he just wasn’t flavour of the month under Frank and that’s fine, the character to come back in the team and become an integral member of this team [is impressive].
“One of the main reasons for them going and winning the Champions League last season was because of him. Without him, I don’t think they’d have done it.”
football.london understands that an offer of around £400,000 per week would be a four-fold increase on the defender’s current deal, with such a huge increase likely to, understandably, be difficult to turn down.
It is believed that the west Londoners have offered the centre-half fresh terms but he is yet to accept.
He is free to talk to European clubs in January if no new deal is to come to fruition before the new year.
