Arsenal’s decision to retain the services of Granit Xhaka could have a major impact on their summer transfer business.
Having looked willing to let the 28-year-old leave for the right price amid links to AS Roma, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta revealed on Sunday that he regards the midfielder as a key player ahead of the new season.
“Xhaka is staying,” Arteta said. “He wanted to play. He is a key player for us.”
Keeping hold of Xhaka could turn out to be a wise decision from the north London outfit especially as Thomas Partey has emerged as an injury doubt for the start of the new season after limping off against Chelsea on Sunday.
But what does this surprise U-turn mean for the remainder of the transfer window?
Although, with the Swizterland international set to stay put, Gunners fans have been keen to know what impact it will have on the club’s search for midfield reinforcements.
football.london‘s Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak offered his view during a Q&A session on Monday afternoon.
“I think Bissouma would be a fantastic signing,” he admitted. “But unfortunately he’s not at the top of central midfielders Arsenal are looking at right now.
“Arsenal are looking at a lot of different central midfielders. They were at least, I don’t know if that’s changed now, with the situation with Granit Xhaka.
“Obviously, we thought Xhaka was leaving, Roma weren’t willing to pay for him so that’s not going to happen as things stand, but as I said earlier in the stream, it doesn’t necessarily mean the deal is completely done.
“Bissouma is one of the midfielders they’re looking at [along with] Ruben Neves, Sander Berge, Manuel Locatelli as well is another one.
“But I think it’s going to be difficult for them to bring in somebody else if Xhaka ends up staying.
“If he ends up leaving, then maybe we will see Bissouma come in, but I don’t think the Partey injury is going to necessarily force Arsenal into any transfer business.”

With Brighton poised to demand around £40million for Bissouma, signing him may hinge on what happens with Xhaka between now and deadline day.
Although, all signs are pointing towards Gunners fans being denied what they consider to be a dream deal for Partey’s perfect midfield partner.
