Youri Tielemans agrees with Roberto Martinez on Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku – Football.London

Youri Tielemans and Roberto Martinez have agreed on the brilliance of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku whilst away on international duty with Belgium.

Lukaku recently became the Red Devils’ record top goal scorer by hitting the 67 landmark in the 3-0 win over Czech Republic in September.

His imperious record in front of goal on the national stage had been matched at club level in recent years as Marina Granovskaia and the Chelsea board decided that they needed his ruthless talent upfront for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season.

The Blues decided to spend around £97.5million on the Belgian to prise him away from Italy and so far, he has scored four goals in all competitions which isn’t a bad return at this early stage.

Belgium teammate Tielemans will face Lukaku when Leicester and Chelsea meet in the Premier League on November 20 and he certainly will be enjoying playing alongside last season’s Serie A MVP winner in the meantime for the upcoming World Cup qualifying game against France.

In his pre-match player press conference, the midfielder was quick to highlight the quality of the 28-year-old and the importance of him to the national team.

He said: “Romelu is a really good striker.

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has weighed in on the ongoing debate between Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel

“I think his record speaks for himself, especially with the national team – he’s scoring so many goals.

“I don’t know how many, I can’t count really, I stopped when he was on 50 because that was an amazing record for him and for the national team but I’m not going to reveal all of his strengths for tomorrow’s game.

“But, the only thing I can say is that it is a pleasure to play with a striker like Romelu because he’s always sharp and always wanting to win the games and he gets us through in many moments.”

Martinez pointed out Lukaku’s ‘conversion rate’ to conclude that the Chelsea star is in a great place with his career.

“Well, I think obviously when you speak about Romelu Lukaku and the outstanding attributes and qualities, he’s a player where if you get him in goalscoring positions- his conversion rate is exceptional,” Martinez said.

“I think when you look at his stats, the amount of goals that he has scored in his career at a young age and what he has done for the national team, he’s already the record goalscorer.

“I start working with Romelu Lukaku at the age of 19 and I’ve seen an evolution.

“Romelu has become a number nine that he can do every single function- he can play with a back to goal, he can run in behind with the power, pace and understanding he has with other players.

“He’s someone that can play with pace and power but also his intelligence as well, so you are talking about a player who is in a great moment of his career and his outstanding knack is to score many goals.”
